Food Police….Put the biscuit down and step away….NOW !
I was sitting at this computer shaking my head at the Orwelian cameras that some British towns are installing in city parks. Not only do they keep a one-eyed gaze on everybody, the camera operator has control of loudspeakers in case some lawbreaker needs to be addressed by the authorities. It was shocking to see that most citizens wanted the cameras and speakers. I knew Brits were having a tough time with “yobs” …but cameras with loudspeakers.
Now if the ying-yang is in balance with the planet- there is somebody in the UK right now…aghast at a proposed law in Miss-ippy…you know, that state comprised of what was once western Alabama…the Magnolia state as it is called. A couple of lawmakers from Miss-Ippy want to create the first food enforcement law for fat folks. Here is the citation from their state house:
Description: Food establishments; prohibit from serving food to any person who is obese.
AN ACT TO PROHIBIT CERTAIN FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS FROM SERVING FOOD TO ANY PERSON WHO IS OBESE, BASED ON CRITERIA PRESCRIBED BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH; TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT TO PREPARE WRITTEN MATERIALS THAT DESCRIBE AND EXPLAIN THE CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING WHETHER A PERSON IS OBESE AND TO PROVIDE THOSE MATERIALS TO THE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS; TO DIRECT THE DEPARTMENT TO MONITOR THE FOOD ESTABLISHMENTS FOR COMPLIANCE WITH THE PROVISIONS OF THIS ACT; AND FOR RELATED PURPOSES.
You read correctly..Miss-Ippy wants too make it illegal for state licensed food sellers to sell food to fat people.
How are they going to enforce it?
Scales?
Measuring tapes?
Those caliper thingies the docs use to measure fat?
Or maybe they will have you dunk into a huge water tank to measure fat content, and your ability to float while they’re at it.
What if this fat customer is still fat, but much less of a fat person than they were a month ago and they’re out celebrating their first twenty pound loss? Sorry…cain’t surve ewe in Mis-Ippy.
What if the person is from out of town visiting a dying relative in the hospital and has no where else to go for a meal? Ewell have ta go ovah to Alabama, ‘I spose.
Buy why does a fat person even need an excuse to eat out? It’s their money, and their health. And who is to say that the fat person who exercises regularly and eats a whole lot of healthy food has better arteries than some skinny little human who smokes like a chimney?
What’s the state going to do…station nurses with cholesterol and blood sugar testing kits at the doorways of restautants?
And somehow…unless Mississippi has different teenagers than the rest of the U-S….I can’t see a teenaged fast food counter clerk who acts as if it is painful to smile and make eye contact, take the bold initiative to tell some six-eight 330 pound lard-butted pulpwood cutter they can’t have a bacon cheeseburger.
I don’t think there’s a rational person in the world who would argue that it is healthy to be overweight. But how healthy is a society that seems to want to slap restrictions on everything, and leave nothing to personal decision and proactive personal action?
I can see the sign along the interstate right now….
You fat folks jes keep on drivin’. Ya heah?
