Going Quiet For A While

This is a "stand-by"....the venerable
instruction is given to broadcasters to
indicate something is about
to happen,and it is time to be quiet.

A week from today, I will be getting ready for
gastric bypass surgery. That wonderful,
flavorful tonic Citrate of Magnesia will do its
magic to send everything out the sluce in
order to give the doctor a clean pipe to
re-plumb.

Tuesday morning, the 26th, I will have surgery.

This is surreal. If you knew how terrified I am
of surgery, you would understand how weird it
is that I am choosing to have this done. Just
having a needle stuck in a vein gives me the
heebie jeebies. But here I am dreading the time
when I have the mask placed over my face, and
wake up sicker than hell.

I have signed off on the reclamation project that,
as one gastric bypass patient said, cuts your best friend's
throat. Food has been one of the fun things in my
life for years and years. You can see it by looking
at my profile, which resembles a manatee.

I have been fat most of my adult life. For
many years I was able to handle the additional
weight with no ill effect. Not so these days. I
am sick. Diabetes is making me miserable. And
there are other things that are either going bad,
or giving signals that the essential parts are about
to wear out. There are more days where I feel
bad, than days when I feel okay. And there are
few days when I feel good.

My eating habits will have to change from fast
food grazing to planned meals and I will have to
think about what I eat. That will be a big switch
from my current habits.

For my fat friends, and you know who you are-
please know that I am not doing this to change my
appearance. Gastric bypass cures, or greatly
diminishes diabetes. Doctors are not sure why, but
it does. I need to get rid of my insulin dependence,
and this is my best bet. That is an "inside" problem.

Looks are not important. You need to understand that.

So this week I am busy, making the final arrangements
for the trip to the hospital and the recovery.

As soon as I can, I'll let you know how things are going.

Until then, your thoughts and prayers would be
appreciated.

War Photographs- Americans Pictured

This is a real-time post for the Hallerin Hilton Hill
Morning show. The issue is whether photos of
American soldiers wounded in war should be published.

My personal opinion is as a general rule, no. But
photographs are a record of history. And ghastly
things happen in war- to both sides. You have to
answer the question of whether the photograph
says anything, tells a story, or whether it is just
a display of bloodshed.

Plus, you have to consider the high number of
personal cameras and recorders that are now
so portable they go to the fornt with the soldier.

Some of the most powerful war photos I have
seen in the past show not the dead or the
wounded, but the faces of the soldiers, sailors,
and airmen.

Watch It Officers: A New Kind Of Knife

I am blessed to have two sons-in-law and one
daughter-in-law. I have grown to love them as
I do my own flesh and blood, and they seem to
at least tolerate being associated with a
maniac.

One of them has the job of standing between
the bad guys and the rest of us. He does a
good job at it. For all off you who have that kind
of job, I want you to look at this video. Click on the

The knife has a gas cannister in the handle. You
mash a button and it injects a shot of gas through
a needle in the end of the knife.

No matter what the doctors say, sinus surgery is
never minor.

Narcotics can be your friend.

The only reason I have not stuck my head in a vat of
Sonic Limeade Slush is the lack of an
appropriate container.

A Clean Face And Overalls

An on-the-air conversation brought this photo to mind.

He was wearing overalls. Probably hand-me
downs from an older brother. His hair was combed,
at least as combed as an eight year old boy's hair is
ever combed. And he was clean as a new
penny. His mama would never have let him go
to school any other way. But if you look carefully,
you'll notice that the overalls are not new,
the shirt is a little worn, and the haircut is
probably done at home.

I know from a note in her diary that his mother was
trying to help make ends meet in 1933. Her worry
was that this child needed new shoes. She was
making bonnets and selling them to people she knew in
the Mountain View Neighborhood around Laurens
Avenue.

His dad was a laborer, and then a truck driver
for a freight company in Knoxville. He never had a
car of his own, and when he got a job at Cas Walkers
in the 60's, he depended on this son to pick him
up after work some nights.

The kid in this picture told me one of the treats
he and his brothers remembered from their
childhood was doughnuts from The Salvation
Army. But he said the down-side was they had to
attend a service to get them.

His mom prayed a lot. He was baptized in a creek
after making a profession of faith at a revival.

A few years after this photo was taken, this kid
found himself in the Pacific with The Sixth Army.

As an adult, his ideas of right and wrong were
clear, and not a lot of in-between. They served him
well as he advanced in his career as a civil servant.

The boy grew into a devoted husband and father.

Seventy five years.

The boy in the photo is gone.

The memories fade a bit.

But the values stand strong.

A Young Firefighter Laid To Rest

Invaders From Mars? Jim Beam Me Up !

When I was a reporter at WSB Radio, I heard this story from
Aubrey Morris. He's the smartest reporter I have ever known and a
walking history book of the last half-century in Atlanta.

This is the first account of the story I have seen in decades.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports key piece of evidence
from the 50's is on display.

I was told the monkey had died from natural causes, and the
people involved offered to dispose of the remains. But I don't
know that for sure.

It was not reported in the article, but also indicated to me
by my mentor that the idea of the prank was hatched after what
could be described as oral consumption of ethanol from
distilled grain.

But you probably figured that one out on your own.
